Escaler Goes Anime

This new year's eve saw the revival of our media noche costume party tradition. The last time we had one was in 2007, so I thought it was time to bring it back and slap a little more life into the celebration. Thanks to my ongoing fixation for japanese stuff, and my cousin Matsumoto Yami-chan's enthusiastic support of my insanity, I proposed the cosplay theme. From the very beginning I wanted to dress up as Ashiya Mizuki from 'Hana Kimi'. She disguises herself as a guy to get into an all-male boarding school, to help an injured student athlete get back into high-jumping again.
I am happy to report that I tied with my brother-in-law Chris for first prize (he showed up as Kakashi-sensei in 'Naruto'). All those pre-dawn hours on the night of December 30 that I spent cutting and splicing three pairs of plaid shorts to make my plaid pants for my Ohsaka Gakuen uniform was worth it. Dotting a newly-purchased tie with a yellow dermatograph was worth it. Creating a bowtie out of three yards of maroon giftwrap ribbon in exchange for the school patch Yami made for my jacket was worth it.

The cosplay's long over and done with, but my costume still hangs over my door, shooting steady bursts of happy vibes all over my room. Cosplay ga suki da! Yay.

Close enough, right?
